Broken English, Broken Rules

As I mentioned earlier, English is hard to learn. It’s hard to teach, too.

We can talk on and on about the so-called rules of each and every sound (the phonetics) or the accompanying exceptions to each rule,

But, I just want to have fun with this beautiful and complicated language. What do you say?

Look at this. to

The word “to”. The single o is

pronounced like the oo in moon

or in too, and like the u in

parachute. Why? It’s

inconsistent with the more

frequent (long o sound) as in

so, go, no, cold

Go ahead and try to find some more of your own examples of a single o sound similar to “to”.
