As some of you may know, I write novels. I’ve written romantic suspense and legal thrillers, stories that explore human weakness or speculate about the bounds of our rules and laws. Yet, even as a writer of fiction who has lived through the degradation of our democracy in real time, the villainy that unfolded over the past week is astonishing. It began when the artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic refused to give the Department of Defense (DOD) carte blanche to use its AI technology without condition. Their objections centered around two fairly basic values: no autonomous weapons and no mass surveillance. This isn’t the stuff of a James Bond novel — why worry that these stipulations would be met with resistance?
