The Writer Santō Kyōden (a.k.a. Kitao Masanobu)
The Writer Santō Kyōden (a.k.a. Kitao Masanobu) by Chōkyōsai Eiri 鳥橋斎栄里
The writer writes, but why? The author authors, but why? The diarist diarizes, but why? There are many reasons why the writer puts a pen to paper or fingers upon a keyboard or voice to a voice recorder. It is part of the human condition, to record events, to send letters to loved ones, to express some ideas or feelings to be passed on to future readers and future generations and so on.

I know why I write. It is out of necessity. My brain is always active, and there isn't enough time in the day for me to express myself verbally, nor do I have the energy to do that, nor are there enough volunteer-friend-listeners available for such a daunting task, therefore I must write stuff down. Can you imagine having such friends ready and willing to listen to all the crazy thoughts that you have in your head?

My writing comes out in various forms. There are notebooks and scattered scraps of paper, poems, song ideas, quotes of the day, and notes, all over the place, everywhere I go; On desks, on chairs, in drawers, in pockets, in backpacks, in notebooks, in various places and home and work, and without saying, on the personal computers.

I love to write, I need to write, It calms me down when I am running around with too many things to do. I say to you all, for your sanity and well being, write on, write on.

That goes for you students too!

You are lucky, because you are forced to write sometimes; essays, short stories, critiques, reviews - and that is a good thing for you,
in the long run.
